Have you ever stopped and considered what a photograph really is??? It is an amazing invention that was conceived way back in 1872, and has been evolving ever since. A french inventor called Joseph Niepce is credited with producing the first photograph, which took 8 hours to expose. It would of been undoubtably an exciting time way back then when those first images were fixed on paper, and handed around for all to be marvelled at. Back then the process was long, and complicated, and generally attempted only by scientists and inventors. But to be able to reproduce an image and fix it to paper, that was an incredible achievement.
Today, we are a million miles away from where photography began. You don't need to be a scientist, to be able to pick up a camera and take a photo. You can even have that image reproduced in a matter of minutes from a number of different sources. No need for messy chemicals; it's all dots and digits.
So what is a photograph?, well that question will be answered differently for each us, but for me the photograph is a way of capturing and preserving a frozen moment of time. There will never be two sunsets the same, no two identical clouds or waterfalls. Children grow and things around us change. No two photos could ever be the same, they are unique in their own right. We can however capture the moments we have and see and share them with those around us because let's face it when I'm old and in the dementia wing of the local retirement home, I'll enjoy looking back on them.
What does a photograph mean to you???????
These photos were taken of Hervey Bay Pier, just after sunset. I love the soft colours that this time of day produces!
